Adidas has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to creating fashion forward clothing and footwear for urban men and women. However, the relatively new Adidas Y3 campaign represents a change in thinking at Adidas that displays an new commitment toward the finest in ready-to-wear fashion. Y3 is a revolutionary line of shoes and clothing bearing the Adidas brand that ignores nearly all of the trends in modern fashion and attempts to create a style that is truly original. At the same time, Adidas Y3 clothing also separates itself from the closed world of couture fashion with ready-to-wear clothing that is accessible to nearly everyone. Here is a rare inside look at the designer behind the Adidas Y3 Style, Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot. Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot was born in Japan in 1943 during the second world war. Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot remained in his home country throughout the period of postwar occupation by the United States and went on to complete a degree in law at Keio University in his early 20s. Rather that immediately committing himself to a career in law, Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot decided to continue his education by studying fashion at Bunka Fashion College where he earned a second degree in 1969. The details of Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot’s personal and professional life are sketchy between the years of 1969 and 1981. However, it is clear that his experiences as a young adult during this period equipped him with a perspective that enabled him to create clothing for the Adidas Y3 line that was relevant to young people even when he had reached his early 60s. In 1981, Y%C5%8Dji Yamamot debuted his initial line of clothing in Tokyo to critical acclaim. He soon went on to split his designs into to different lines of clothing, including Yohji Yamamoto and Y’s. Y’s is the line of clothing that Adidas Y3 has evolved out of and was originally recognized as a hot line of clothing for young men and women in Tokyo during the late 80s and throughout the 90s. Despite the success of both of these clothing lines, the designer eventually fell into debt and decided to partner up with Adidas for a global line of truly unique clothing.
