The book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was published in the United States on the 1st September 1998.
It was published a year previously, on the 26th June 1997 in the UK under the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
The title was changed as the American publisher didn't think children would know what a philosopher was. Some other countries kept the change for the same reason or because it was easier to translate.
