Depends who you start out with I suppose. I happened to start out with Torchic. But you'll need a good water Pokemon, so I caught a Marill. Later on I decided to catch an Electrike. Electricity is always nice to have around. Eventually you'll need a fying Pokemon. I didn't like Taillow much so I caught a Swablu. I made a mistake of having too many fighting type Pokemon by getting a Makuhita and a Shroomish. My Blaziken was the only fighting tyoe I needed but hey you live and learn.
