The whole plotline of the anime takes place in a fictional country called Amestris. Ed's and Al's hometown is Risenbool and most of the state alchemist live in central.
Most of the strongest Alchemists appear to be men.
The goal was more psychological than spiritual. The alchemists were attempting to cure the "darkness of midlife". The psychologist Carl Jung studied the work of the alchemists for decades, and believed that hidden within their writings, were psychological explanations for their work.
So far in the series, there is no female state alchemists. There are female generals such as Olivia Armstrong but I highly doubt she is a state alchemist.
They tried to turn lead into metaland make potions for ever lasting life(live forever)They also tried converting cheap metal to gold. With this contribution, it really helped a lot in barter. The Master Work is what all alchemists aspire to attain: turning lead or simpler metals into gold. The solid compound they create is known as the philosopher's stone, which can turn the metal into gold with only a sliver of it. Another bi-product of the master work is a liquid know was the elixir of life, which when drunk will cause the user to never fall ill and live possibly forever. The process is know to involve sulphur, and the philosopher's stone is yellow, showing a link between the two.
Cerium was not known by alchemists.
The alchemists were unaware that atoms even existed.

Alchemists tried to make GOLD from base metals. Scientists know that theoretically Gold can only be made by altering the number of protons in an atom. Alchemists did NOT know about protons etc., .
I don't think "alchemists" is the word you meant to use, because your question does not make sense. Alchemists are people who try to magically turn lead into gold, or otherwise magically turn one substance into another.

Alchemists were researchers who worked in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle ages.
all state alchemists carry a pocket watch with the insignia on it, and a jacket too I think
