Humans are the "second born" (technically third, but who's counting). They are, at the times of the events in the Lord of the Rings, definitely the ascendant race; the elves are leaving the world, and the dwarves and the hobbits were never really major players: dwarves are the direct creation of Aule, and hobbits may be an offshoot of humans; it's not clear exactly where they came from.
