In the 74th Hunger Games, in "Hunger Games", book one, Katniss was barely able to find any water for a while. She called out to Haymitch for water, but by his lack of response, that told her she was near a source of water. Eventually, after a lot of wandering and searching, Katniss located a few ponds. She got her water from the ponds, and purified it in her flask before drinking it. There was also a lake she could have used for water, but it was a long way away from where she was, and that was where the Careers were, so she didn't want to risk it. In the 75th Hunger Games, in "Catching Fire", book two, Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and Mags receive a silver parachute containing a spile, which got water out of the trees after a small hole was drilled through the bark. In both Catching Fire and Mockingjay, there is no mention of who sent the spile, so it could have either been a District Four tribute, possibly Annie, or it was Haymitch. With the spile, there was no need for any other water source besides trees, which is fortunate considering the only other source of water was the salt water of the beach, which will make you extremely sick if too much is consumed.
