Dr. Raymond Damadian, a physician and scientist, toiled for years trying to produce a machine that could noninvasively scan the body with the use of magnets. Along with some graduate students, he constructed a superconducting magnet and fashioned a coil of antenna wires. Since no one wanted to be the first one in this contraption, Damadian volunteered to be the first patient. When he climbed in, however, nothing happened. Damadian was looking at years wasted on a failed invention, but one of his colleagues bravely suggested that he might be too big for the machine. A svelte graduate student volunteered to give it a try, and on July 3, 1977, the first MRI exam was performed on a human being. It took almost five hours to produce one image, and that original machine, named the "Indomitable," is now owned by the Smithsonian Institution. Hope it helps xx DD
That inventor (no false modesty here) was Raymond Damadian himself, a medical doctor who, in June, 1970, used the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance -- now called magnetic resonance or MR -- to distinguish healthy tissue from cancer in mouse specimens. In March, 1971, Damadian established -- for the first time -- a medical application for MR (see "Tumor Detection..." in the bibliography). The experiment showed that cancer gave off different signals than healthy tissue under magnetic resonance, and Damadian concluded that MRI would become valuable in diagnosis. "The results suggest that this technique may prove useful in the detection of malignant tumors." At that point, MR, then called nuclear magnetic resonance, had been a tool for physicists and chemists, and it had an honored history: the 1937 discovery of nuclear magnetic resonance won the 1944 Nobel Prize for PhysicE; the 1952 prize recognized advances in the field

No. On line it said she didn't get married.Wrong. She got married, October, 2010. On Facebook it says she is 7 mos. pregnant (as of March 2011) so she must be close to delivering by now. I saw her wedding pics and it looked like she was already showing at her wedding so she must have been 3 mos. or so along in October. I really think she is adorable. She has planned the wedding for a long time, so the preg. must have been a big surprise. I wish her well!
