The answer to that; I THINK is: she killed herself after an argument with her husband when she stoped @ the Del Coronado in San Diego, Cali. I heard that they were on their way some where. I really don't think my answer is correct, so if you know I am wrong plz correct me; I want to know the right answer.

I put my answer as it is because I heard this story waiting for a ride in Sea World in Cali. (lol, don't ask) We were on a vacation and started talking to this lady (well, she strted talking to us) and she asked us what hotel we stayed in (Sheraton) and then she told us about the story of Kate Morgan. So to this day I was just thinking about it; I Googled it for more info and I asked HOW DID SHE DIE? on Wiki Answers, but nobody answered, so I put down what I THINK IS TRUE.

Hi Im jeannette Mendoza,

I am here to improve your answer.

Since its existence in 1888, the popular Hotel Del Coronado had ghost stories attached to it soon after its grand opening. The hotel is said to be haunted by a woman, whose death has yet to be conclusively deemed as a murder or suicide. The ghost is said to belong to a Kate Morgan, who along with her husband, Tom, made a living as a con artist during the 1800s.

Traveling by way of trains, the two posed as brother and sister, tricking men into a profitable game of cards for money. When Kate found out that she was pregnant in the November of 1892, she wanted to leave the thieving lifestyle behind them. It was Tom who was not in agreement. On a train heading for San Diego, they fought and Tom got off somewhere near Orange Count or Los Angeles.

It was agreed that Tom would meet Kate in San Diego for Thanksgiving. When Kate reached San Diego, she gave the alias "Lottie Anderson Bernard" when checking into the Hotel Del Coronado. When Thanksgiving came and passed, with no sign of Tom, she began searching for him throughout the area. Reports state that at this time, she was appearing sick and looking pale. It is thought that she performed an abortion on herself in an attempt to please Tom.

Reports also state that while Kate awaited the return of her husband, she bought a gun in San Diego. Shortly after, Kate was found on a set of steps leading to a beach. She was shot in the head and considered a suicide victim. But, there have been skeptics doubting this claim. A lawyer, Alan May, who is familiar with murder cases, stated in 1990, that he did not think she committed suicide. He wrote in a book called "The Legend of Kate Morgan: The Search for the Ghost of Hotel Coronado." he stated that when he analyzed old records, there were discrepancies regarding the bullets that were used in Kate's gun, as well as the position that her body was found at the time of her death. He believes that she was murdered by Tom.

When Kate stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado, she was checked into room 302, which today is room 3312. The hotel is also to have another haunted room in the unit 3502, which once serves as a maid's accommodations. She had become friends with Kate and the day after the funeral, disappeared. It is speculated that Tom may have killed her as well.

Both rooms display odd occurrences, such as malfunctioning electrical equipment, cold breezes, as well as objects being moved around the room by unknown forces. Kate's ghost has been sighted walking down the hallways and standing at certain windows. May also claims that a light located over the steps where Kate met her end, will not stay lit, no matter how many bulbs are replaced.

The hotel can be found at 1500 Orange Avenue in Coronado, California. As a guest, you can rent a self-guided audio tour, which is available at the Signature Shop. The tour will briefly make reference to Kate Morgan.

--------------------

In May of 1983, a Secret Service agent that was meant to be protecting then Vice President Bush was in need of protection himself when the ghost of Kate Morgan appeared suddenly in his room at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego one night.

The Secret Service agent eventually decided to leave his room after complaining about cold breezes and drapes blowing about mysteriously, even though he had checked to make sure that all of the windows were closed. He also complained that he had heard loud gurgling noises throughout the night and that his room was bathed in a strange, eerie glow. He called reception and said that he was tired of hearing loud noises above him all night and wished to be transferred to another room. The problem was that there was nothing above his room as he was already on the top floor.

Was this the ghost of Kate Morgan that the Secret Service agent had witnessed? Many other guests at the Hotel Del Coronado have had similar experiences when staying in Kate Morgan's old hotel room, and other guests have noticed Kate's presence throughout the hotel. But i was told he thought it was a party and he call at exactly 1 A.M. in the morning said there was a party upstairs and wouldn't let him sleep, but they told him he was on the 4th floor(it was much smaller back then they made it bigger WAY BIGGER NOW). So it was ghost haunting? Or Kate Morgan?

Who was Kate Morgan, and why is she now haunting the Hotel Del Coronado? First though, a briefing on the Hotel Del Coronado at the time of Kate's death.

The San Diego of 1885 was a very different place from the San Diego of today. Things were a lot rougher in those days, and murders and suicides were rampant in the city. The water supply in the city wasn't terribly great and trains didn't yet connect to Los Angeles.

But despite all this, a man named E.B. Babcock decided that he wanted to build a luxury hotel somewhere in the West. He liked what he saw in San Diego, and purchased the island of Coronado and North Island for the paltry sum of $110,000. To help subsidize his future hotel, he sold off small portions of the land to private citizens. It cost over $1 million to build E.B. Babcock's 399 room hotel.

By 1891, the Hotel Del Coronado had already opened and United States president Benjamin Harrison had come out to visit the hotel and stay as a guest. Enter Kate Morgan and her husband Thomas, both a pair of professional swindlers.

The above is the common mythology of Kate Morgan and her involvement with the Hotel Del Coronado. However this may be completely wrong. In 2006 there was a 2 1/2 year study of all the available evidence which included 20 subject matter experts in twelve different disciplines. This study found that Kate Morgan was no where near the Hotel Del Coronado in 1892. While there is convincing circumstantial evidence she was there, that evidence is incomplete and contradictory. Perhaps the most important piece of evidence is that a guest in the hotel named Joseph A. Jones told a porter that he had seen the young woman who was killed several days before their arrival in San Diego on the train at Denver Colorado. He said she was in the company of a well-dressed gentleman companion. This companion left the train north of San Diego according to Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones, who was a consular officer and export agent living at the time in India, had no other connection to this young woman. The problem is that Kate Morgan was working in Los Angeles on that day and so could not have been in Denver, some 1000 miles to the East. The young woman told a similar story to the Hotel chief clerk on the morning of the day she died.

The confusing piece is that both the real Kate Morgan from Iowa and the actual Beautiful Stranger knew a man in common named George L. Allen, who resided in Iowa at the time. This has confused many people looking into this mystery, including not less than four different authors. But when all the facts are considered, it turns out this woman's actual identity is Mrs. Lottie A. Anderson Barnard (note the spelling). Her name was in fact misrecorded by the hotel clerk who wrote it in the Hotel register upon her arrival. And it was this woman, who records show resided formerly in Detroit, Michigan as she claimed in 1892, who died at the Hotel Del Coronado.

It is often said that Kate and Thomas Morgan were swindlers or grifters. However this story, which appears to be traceable to author Allan May, could not be further from the truth according to a Morgan family historian. In fact, there is no evidence whatsoever that Thomas Morgan ever gambled. And there is no evidence that Kate Morgan at any time engaged in frauds, although there are indications that she was not above telling some tall tales.

There is some evidence that the real Kate Morgan actually died in the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, California. In fact, it is quite possible she left Los Angeles in 1892 for some reason having to do with relatives up North. She may have remained in Northern California when she learned she had supposedly "died" in Coronado, to the south. At the time she was on the run, having left her husband Thomas Morgan back in Iowa without divorcing him. She was legally his property in 1892 and would have had no interest in contacting him or his friends. When she heard her husband's family was convinced she had died, she would have been elated. She was now free to live her life without worrying that someday one of them might find her. And she was apparently successful in doing this and even had a child until she died suddenly and tragically in 1906 in San Francisco.
