When a positively charged rod is brought near a neutral rod, the positive charge of the rod induces a separation of charges within the neutral rod. Electrons in the neutral rod are attracted towards the positive rod, causing the side of the neutral rod closest to the positive rod to become negatively charged, while the far side becomes positively charged. This creates an electrostatic attraction between the positive rod and the neutral rod, causing the neutral rod to be drawn towards the positively charged rod.

An Ellicott pendulum is a temperature compensated clock pendulum. The metal rod of a pendulum changes its length with temperature. The consequence is, that a colder pendulum swings faster (the rod is shorter) and a warm pendulum swings slower (longer rod). The Ellicott pendulum compensates this temperature error of the pendulum. It consists of a steele rod and two brass rods, wich are connectet in one point above the pendulum bob. Brass has a higher temperature coefficient than steele. On the free end of the three rods, a special lever mechanism, controlled by the lenght difference of the rods, lifts the pendulum bob up, when the length of the rods grows. The bob stays at its position and the period of the pendulum is without temperature influence. See also http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellicott_pendulum.png
In the early 80's, I played bass with Rod Black in a band called Alvin Screamer. Rod said He joined Doucette a couple of years after "Mama let him play" was released. He is an amazing player. I learned a lot playing with him. I wonder where he is now? I tried to help Rod out in the mid 80's. He left town (Belleville) with one of my guitar amps and never returned it or paid for it. I had heard at one point that he was playing lead guitar for Stompin Tom... I remember Rod mentioning Alvin Screamer... and I remember an excellent bass player named Dale that became an artist for Marvel..... and a drummer named, I think Mike O'Neil.... So yeah, I wonder where Rod is now, and I wonder where my Fender amp is too!
