Where is the distributor on 1989 ford ranger 2.9L I have looked under the hood and can not locate?

The distributor is at the back of the engine . I was looking at a picture of the Ford 2.9 L , but all I could see was the spark plug wires on each side of the engine leading to the distributor because it looked like the upper portion of the intake manifold extended over top of the distributor. Remove the engine cover inside the van and locate the distributor. Inside the distributor is a sensor which will activate your fuel pump. Also locate the oil pressure switch which will also give power to the fuel pump. One of these should do it and both are very easy to access and replace from under the inside engine cover.

I would imagine that you are referring to a high voltage electrical distributor on the engine rather than an automobile distributor. Your Outback doesn't use one. Look under the hood and locate the spark plug wires. Trace any of them back away from the spark plugs and you will see that they plug directly into the coil on top and near the front of the engine.
