What is the meaning of sign artist?

A sign or or what most people say signed artist is a musican, singer or rapper who is just got put under a label. For example lil wayne is signed to young money records or my favorite lecrae who is under Reach records. In music thats what musican, singer and rappers aim for. The reason artist what to be under a label is because it helps to get them more known which is what labels are for.
