∙ 10y ago- In 1935 Dudley Nichols, a writer, refused to accept an Oscar for The Informer. This was due to the conflicts between the Academy and the Writer's Guild.
- George C. Scott refused the honor for his portrayal of a World War II General in Patton (1970). The reason being that he thought the Academy Awards was a "two-hour meat parade."
- In 1972, Marlon Brando refused the award for Best Actor for The Godfather due to discrimination toward Native Americans by the United States. Brando had previously won for On the Waterfront (1954).

Marlon Brando, who won the 1972 Best Actor Oscar for "The Godfather," sent a spokesperson, Sacheen Littlefeather, to decline the award. She explained that Brando's action was in response to "the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry and on television in movie reruns."
