THE HISTORY OF CITY OF SHEFFIELD HATTERSWhen the Sheffield Hatters were formed in the early 1960's they became the first women's basketball team in England. Since then, the club has developed into the most successful women's sports club in the country.Hatters have dominated English Women's Basketball since the early 1990's winning numerous national honours earning them the title of 'the most successful club in English Women's team sport . After dominating English Women's Basketball and winning the Domestic Treble in 1996-1997, last season saw the continuation of the fiercest rivalry in women's basketball between the Hatters and Rhondda Rebels. Rebels emerged on top, winning the cup final in January and the Play-off final in April, albeit by a narrow margin of two points scored with just four seconds remaining! Hatters retained their league title in March. Further change took place during the close season following the retirement of 'the first lady' of English basketball, head coach Betty Codona O.B.E. Betty retired from senior basketball following a career which has seen her coach over 500 games - a record for an English coach - and win well in excess of 30 National titles. This season promises to be the most open in years with many sides appearing to be in with a chance of the league success. Once again a Hatters team will be looking to be in the running to retain their league title once more The club has a reputation for providing playing and coaching opportunities for girls and women of all ages. The junior development programme has been so successful that many young players move into the senior team and go on to win international honours. Well in excess of 150 players have gone on to represent their country whilst at the club along with several coaches and team managers. Hatters currently have players involved with GB - recently promoted to the top division of European basketball and England at junior level.The Hatters provide sporting opportunities for players of all ages irrespective of ability or financial means. Over the years hundreds have trained and played for the club, becoming part of the 'Hatters family' in the process.The club runs a strong junior development programme with teams from under 10 up to under 18. More than this, we are a 'community club' our players and coaches coach regularly in many of Sheffield's primary and secondary schools.Hatters became the first women's basketball club in the country to gain Sport England's Clubmark Accreditation.City of Sheffield Hatters are managed by a committee comprising of a dedicated group of volunteers (parents, players and coaches) who are involved in all major decisions on how the club is run.
