Alnwick Castle was used as the film setting for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in the Harry Potter movies.
There is a similar school to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (in design). It is called "Harvard University". (You've probably heard of it). They have a similar studying room to the Great Room, in Hogwarts. Studying Room Picture: http://image3.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/Harvard_dmv.jpg There is also an unconfirmed rumor that Hogwarts was built to look like Magdalen College. Physically, It is believed (by me,) that Hogwarts was never built. it quotes in the books that the founders of the castle were Godric Griffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. Remember, we're in the wizarding world here, and these are the greatest wizards and witches of the age known. the four founder magicked up Hogwarts, using their wands, and a bit of muggle hard-slog. as it also states in the films, that Salazar Slytherin BUILT a chamber of secrets within the castle. This gives the impression the some HP fans that these four built Hogwarts. ~hope this helps~

Lots of the castle is CGI or built of sets, but some places inside the school are from different churches as well. In the first two movies lots was filmed outside Alnwick Castle in the first two films.

During the battle a lot of the castle is destroyed and is no doubt re-built. There is a poster for the film which shows Hogwarts burning which you can find a link to in related links.
