Gandalf.
J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the Hobbit, created Bilbo, an interesting character. At one point Bilbo lets out a horrible shriek and begins to shake like jelly because Thorin has said they might never return to his house.
Bilbo travels with Gandalf and Beorn to the long north pass around Mirkwood. Then they stay at Beorn's house for the winter. Then Gandalf and Bilbo travel to Rivendell, there Bilbo gets medical attention. Then Gandalf and Bilbo travel the long way to the Hobbit lands.
Of course!! Bilbo "wondered whether he ought not, now he had the magic ring, to go back into the horrible, horrible, tunnels and look for his friends. He had just made up his mind that it was his duty, that he must turn back-and very miserable he felt about it, when he heard voices."
It does not give a precise length of time on their way out, but looks like 17 days based on the conversations. They left on Midsummer's Day. On the way back home with Gandalf he spends a week there.
If Tolkien's words on the subject are to be taken at face value, then The Hobbit, Or There and Back Again are Bilbo's memoirs -- his account of his great Adventure. In the final chapter of The Return of the King, it says this: "There was a big book with plain red leather covers; its tall pages were now almost filled. At the beginning there were many leaves covered with Bilbo's thin wandering hand; but most of it was written in Frodo's firm flowing script...The title page had many titles on it, crossed out one after another so: My Diary. My Unexpected Journey. There and Back Again. And What Happened After. Adventures of Five Hobbits. The Tale of the Great Ring, compiled by Bilbo Baggins from his own observations and the accounts of his friends. What We Did in the War of the Ring. "Here Bilbo's hand ended and Frodo had written: THE DOWNFALL OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS AND THE RETURN OF THE KING (as seen by the Little People; being the memoirs of Bilbo and Frodo of the Shire, supplemented by the accounts of their friends and the learnings of the Wise.) Together with extracts from Books of Lore translated by Bilbo in Rivendell." In The Return of the King film, Sam is heard referring to Bilbo's memoirs as There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale by Bilbo Baggins. In short, The Hobbit is the "memoirs" of Bilbo, and The Lord of the Rings the memoirs of Frodo.

Bilbo brought back a magical ring, several chests of treasure, and most importantly, the Arkenstone, a precious gem that was a symbol of the dwarves' alliance.
When Thorin learned of Bilbo's treachery he kicked him out and said that the 1/14 share promised to Bilbo would be used to buy back the Arkenstone. He figured Bilbo would get little of it.

Bilbo Baggins is loyal because when the dwarves were captured by the goblins he went back into the horrible, horrible tunnels and look for his friends. He had just made up his mind that it was his duty, and that he must turn back.
