John T. Connor was appointed to be U.S. Secretary of Commerce by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 18, 1965, and retained this position until he resigned on January 31, 1967. An attorney, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and former researcher with the Office of Scientific Research and Development, at the time of his resignation Connor publicly stated he was leaving to return to private business. However, Connor's resignation was based on his opposition to the war in Vietnam and its negative affect on the U.S. economy. He became CEO of Allied Chemical after his resignation. A few years later, and under the presidency of Richard Nixon, Connor formed a protest organization, Business Executives Against the Vietnam War. Connor died at the age of 85 in October 2000 due to blood cancer.
