After beating red and getting a kanto starter from professor oak in pallet town, go to saffron city's big building and Steven will be at the desk. He will ask u what color stone u like and he will give you treecko (grass type) if u pick green, torchic (fire type) if u pick red, and mudkip (water type) if u pick blue.
