Anna Mary Robertson Moses (more commonly known as Grandma Moses) was inspired by the outdoors. She painted from memory and only those things she experienced (with rare exception). She longed to recreate the scenes she had seen with her husband Thomas. But she was a farmwife and had little time to spare. Thomas died in 1927 and then Arthritis took hold in her hands and she was no longer able to do farm work. She took to her long-postponed passion in the 1930s and at the age of 76 was discovered. Her biggest influences were nature and the events of friends and family.
