Anna Marie Rosenberg (nee Lederer) was born in 1902 in Budapest, immigrating to the US in 1912 with her family.

Marriage in 1919 resulted in her surname changing to Rosenberg.

During WW2, she worked in various government jobs, as well as regional director of the War Manpower Commission from 1942 - 1945. She also ran a consulting firm.

She was awarded the Medal of freedom in 1945, and the Medal for Merit in 1947.

In 1950, she withstood a considerable smear campaign by Senator Joseph McCarthy and was named Assistant Secretary of Defense, a position she held until early 1953.

In 1962, she became divorced and subsequently married Paul G. Hoffman, a United Nations official.

She passed away on May 9, 1983.
