Anna Young was born in 1756, the daughter of Mary Jane Graeme and her husband, James Young. After Mary Jane's death, Anna and her brother John were raised in the Graeme household by their grandparents, Dr. Thomas and Ann Diggs Graeme. Anna's aunt, the poet Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson had a hand in their education and upbringing. Anna married William Smith, M.D. at the Graemes' home in Horsham, Pennsylvania, Graeme Park. Perhaps influenced by her aunt, she was an extensive contributor of poetry to the Columbian Magazine. Among her poems were "Ode to Liberty," "An Elegy to the American Volunteer, who fell at Lexington, April 19, 1775," "To the Memory of General Warren" and "A Walk in the Churchyard at Wicaco." "Ode to Gratitude" was written at the age of thirteen is a tribute to the kindness of her aunt. "Sylvia's Song to Damon" was composed in the spring of 1775 for her husband soon after her betrothal, and "A Summer's Evening Walk in Wicaco Churchyard" was composed in June 1775. Many of Anna's poems were recorded by Elizabeth into one of her own commonplace books, which is currently owned by Dickinson College. Anna Young Smith died March 22, 1780 at the age of 23. Elizabeth wrote a tribute to her niece's memory entitled "Lines on Reperusing the Aforesaid Poem, When the Composer Was No More."
