John D. Rockefeller, Jr. likely did many things in 1945, but most memorable and significant among his actions that year was his donation of land in Manhattan for a permanent headquarters of the United Nations. The six blocks he donated (worth an estimated $8.5 million in 1945) stretch from 42nd Street to 48th Street and from 1st Avenue to the East River. By agreement of the federal government, the land is considered international territory.
