An actor by the name of Thomas Dartmouth “Daddy” Rice, wrote a song about “Jim Crow.” He supposedly got the idea of the song from hearing a slave or a Black stable boy singing the song. In 1828, Rice appeared on stage as “Jim Crow,” an exaggerated Black stereotype character. Rice, who was White, was one of the first performers to wear black face makeup, later popular in minstrel shows. Rice’s Jim Crow song and dance routine became very popular and he performed in places like Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and New York, in 1832. Supposedly, the Jim Crow laws passed in the South following the Civil War were named after Rice's character.
