The willow tree represents the love Peeta has for Katniss.
Like how difficult are her competitors to beat? Well, several of Katniss' opponents in the first book had trained their whole lives to be in the Games. Katniss is pretty good at survival, though, so she doesn't have too much trouble taking care of herself. One of the most challenging parts is being what the capital wants her to be while in the public eye. Or if you were referring to the type of contest she is expected to be in, it is a fight to the death. She must fight off 23 other kids to be the winner. The government formed the Games after the rebellions to keep the districts in line. The point is to show how powerful it is by saying "look, we're so powerful, we can take your kids and make them kill each other, and you're so weak you can't do anything about it," like how a man might beat his girlfriend in an abusive relationship to get her to submit to him.

It depends on the part of the book. When Katniss and Peeta are kissing, probably happy and in love, like they are. When Katniss is running from the mutts, scared, like she. When Katniss is hiding in the tree with Rue, daring, like they are.
Chapter eleven is where all 24 tributes are standing on the pedestals in the arena waiting for the gong to sound to begin the Hunger Games. Katniss runs into the forest, and finds herself a tree to say at for a while, and then she hears Peeta and the career tributes below her working together.

One example of alliteration in "The Hunger Games" is the phrase "stinging spile" used to describe a tree trunk that is used by tributes to collect water. Another example is "sugar-coated seduction" used to describe the Capitol's glamorous and deceptive tactics during the games.
