On Lag Baomer it is customary to: visit the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, to light bonfires in his honor, and to have a field day in which children play with bows and arrows. Lag BaOmer is celebrated on the thirty-third day of the Counting of the Omer (see Leviticus ch.23), which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. Tradition states that a plague, which had taken the lives of many of Rabbi Akiva's disciples, ceased on this day. According to the Talmud and Midrash, Lag BaOmer also marks the anniversary of death of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a Sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century CE, and the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of Kabbalah in the form of the Zohar, a landmark text of Jewish mysticism.
According to Nishmas (http://www.nishmas.org/chassidus/holidays/lgbomr57.htm)A number of reasons are cited for the custom of lighting the bonfires of Lag B'Omer. One is a rememberance of the fire at Mt. Sinai at the giving of the Torah. Another is to remind us of the fire that was always present when Rebbi Shimon Bar Yochai learned Torah.

Jews do not count 49 days to Lag B'Omer. There are 49 days of the Omer which represent the time during which the harvest occurs and also represent the intervening period between the Exodus in Egypt (Passover) and the Receiving of the Torah (Shavuot). Lag B'Omer is the 33rd day of this counting and commemorates the death of Talmudic Sage Shimon bar Yochai. The Sage said that his Yahrzeit (or death anniversary) should be a day of merriment, and that's why Lag B'Omer is celebrated.
