Smaug the dragon is the main one. Others can include, the giant Spiders from the chapters in the HUGE forest, the evil elves from the same group of chapters and the Worgs from a few chapters before or after that.
A lot of the conflict is man vs self, and it is showing the struggle that Bilbo faces in earning is courage and so forth. However, the main goal of the book is to defeat the dragon Smaug, and in the movie the 'pale orc' is hunting down Thorin Oakenshield.

∙ 14y agoIn The Hobbit, there is no continuous antagonist. Instead the narrative takes the protagonist (Bilbo) and his friends from one dangerous situation to another, with multiple threats throughout.
These include the Trolls, the Goblins, the wolves, the Spiders of Mirkwood, the Wood-elves, Smaug and then multiple enemies in the Battle of Five Armies.

∙ 13y agoThere are many. J.R.R. Tolkien doesn't give a direct antagonist but rather gives obstacles for the hobbit and dwarves to encounter. E.g: spiders, trolls, goblins, wargs, Smaug.
Figuratively speaking, the antagonist would be the fact that the creatures don't "Know Thy Self", as Smaug died because of that. Another could be greed and darkness and vanity.

∙ 13y agoI would say the main antagonist would be Saruman, the treacherous wizard of Isengard. However, Sauron is obviously a main antagonist too, since the entire book and movie series center around destroying him for good.
