<p>The Alston, Alliston and Elliston Families from East Anglia and Essex could be descended from Aethelred I. The surname first occurs at Stansfield Suffolk in 1224 about 9 miles north of Stambourne in North Essex. An Anglo saxon called Alestan held a manor in Stambourne, he also appears to of held numerous other manors including West Ham. It is known he survived the Norman Conquest and his family stayed at Stambourne until about the time Alliston appears at Stanfield in a feet of fines 1224. There is a record of West Ham being granted to Aethelstan Ealdorman of East Anglia by King Edgar and as Alestan is a known derivitive of Aethelstan it seems likely that Alestan may have inherited the land which normally went from Father to Son. Aethelstan had a brother called Eadric who had a son called Aethelweard the historian, he claimed to be the grandsons grandson of Athelred I. Aethelred I was the elder brother to Alfred the Great, when Alfred died the crown was disputed between one of Aethelreds sons (Aethelwold) who had the senior claim and Edward the Elder, Alfreds son. The wittan backed Edward and Aethelwold was killed in battle. Aethelstan Earldorman of East Anglia was probably the grandson of Aethelreds other brother Aethelhelm.<p>
