In the past, women were not allowed equal rights of property ownership (patents are a form of intellectual property) and many women patented their inventions under their husband's or father's names, regardless of ethnicity.

The Most Important known African ( or black if you must ) female inventors are;

Madam C. J. Walker, who lived between 1867 & 1887, is famous for developing a hair cream formulated for African women.

Miriam E. Benjamin, who lived between UNKNOWN & UNKNOWN, is famous for developing a chair which allowed hotel guests to call a waiter without getting out of their chair, the design was modified and used in the United States House of Representatives
