Sherlock Holmes was presumed dead after a confrontation with his archenemy, Professor Moriarty ('The Final Problem') He left a message to Watson, saying goodbye.

Only after several years did Sir Conan Doyle write a new story, and claimed that Sherlock hadn't died, but had to stay hidden, even from his best friend, Dr. Watson.

Pure speculation: perhaps he tried to get rid of the detective (permanently) and concentrate on other stories, and make the readers stop asking for more Holmes adventures. It's highly unlikely that it was meant as a publicity stunt (by that I mean that I don't think he killed him on purpose to raise his sales when he brought him back to life).

Two things that most people don't know or have forgotten are that on 10 OCT 1893, his father, Charles Altamont Doyle, died after being in an institution for more than a decade. Also, Conan Doyle's first wife Louisa Hawkins Doyle was diagnosed with tuberculosis late in 1893. These may have been the two straws that broke the proverbial camel's back, and led to the death of Sherlock Holmes in the December 1893 issue of The Strand Magazine.

He wasn't actually killed off. He really died of old age. At the end of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, he faked his death in order to kill Moriarty. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was bored with the character, and killed him off but later ressurected him.

Not if he could avoid it, no. However, one has to account for self-defense or the defense of others. In one story, Dr. Watson was grazed by a perpitrator's bullet and Holmes warned the man that had that bullet actually killed the doctor he would have killed him for it. Usually, those he fought against ended up in gaol, wounded during a struggle or as unharmed as they could be, but it was not the case for Prof. Moriarty who took a tumble over Reichenbach falls for trying to kill the consulting detective. In short, Mr. Holmes could not really be considered a killer. War is defense as well so neither could Dr. Watson.
