He believed that God had sent him to free people. He came to this realization after he had bought a lot of land in hopes of making money off of it; unfortunately he borrowed a lot fo money to buy land just in time for the Panic of 1837, which he lost thousands. He then tried to make more money but gave up after many failures. He then thought that he wasn't meant for that stuff and that God sent him to free the people in slavery. If it goes any further into it that that, then people from The Bible inspired him, probably Moses who freed a bunch of people.
