They found brain matter in John Carpenter's car (NOT the director) but they didn't have DNA testing back then they could only test blood type and the blood type found in the car matched Bob Crane's blood type (there was other evidence but I don't wanna get into that sorry) so they prosecuted him but he wasn't found guilty. A few years later they got DNA testing and tried to reopen the case but they didn't preserve the evidence properly so they couldn't reopen it. Also John Carpenter died four years after he was found not guilty.
