Martha Jane Cannary, known as Calamity Jane (1852-1903), was a notorious American frontier woman in the days of the Wild West. She usually dressed in men's clothing and passed as a man to get jobs such as a muleskinner, railroad worker, and army scout. She could drink, gamble, and shoot with the best (or worst) of her male companions. For a while she travelled with Wild Bill Hickok and was in Deadwood when he was killed. She later claimed they had been married and she was buried beside him.
