His parents were immigrants from Ireland during US slavery. A frequent visitor to England as a boy, Samuel Isham Butler aspired to become a medical doctor to help people attain and maintain good health. An heir of well-to- do parents, he dreamed a opening his own hospital for wounded soldiers during the civil war.

He did however gained the respect of many citizens and housed a tent called the 'Butler Tent' near Richmond, VA . Many revered Dr. Butler for his sincere dedication to the healing and welfare of his patients.

He owned slaves as many white did across the deep south.

Upon practicing medicine in Georgia, Samuel fathered 2 boys by a slave girl named Mary, who was a ' graduation gift' from his parents.

After emancipation, he gave his two mulatto boys Isham Samuel and Esau Harold several acres of land to further their independence .

Isham married an heiress of property, Miss Melvina Bryant of Mandarin, FL.

At his death in St. Johns, FL, Isham Samuel Butler owned about 7 acres off of highway 13. It was a showplace for many generations.

Dr. Butler's legacy is memorialized by great great granddaughter Gwendolyn Elouise Butler of Mandarin.
