Eugène Ionesco, born Eugen Ionescu, (1909 – 1994) was a French-Romanian playwright, poet, novelist and a literary critic. He is considered as one of the foremost playwrights of the Theatre of the Absurd. Beyond ridiculing the most banal situations, Ionesco's plays depict the solitude of humans and the insignificance of one's existence. Among his works, it is worth mentioning the plays La Cantatrice chauve (The Bald Soprano), La Leçon (The Lesson), Les Chaises (The Chairs) and Rhinocéros(Rhinoceros).
