Gordon Swift was born and grew up on his father's farm in Edinboro, PA. At the age of 19, he was appointed principal of the Loleta, Penna., Schools. In 1911, he graduated cum laude from Yale University. From 1911 to 1917, he was State Supervising Agent for the Conn. Dept. of Education and Survey Branch Director. In 1918, he was on the Board of Psychological Examiners for the U.S. Army. Gordon Swift assumed the duties of superintendent of schools in Watertown, CT in March, 1919. He remained superintendant in Watertown for more than 35 years. Just before his retirement in 1955, the new junior high school he had planned was completed and named in his honor: Gordon C. Swift Junior High School.
