James Bennett and his wife Nancy Bennett, hosted one of the most significant events in American history. Yeoman farmers in Orange County, North Carolina (now Durham County), they lived along the Hillsborough Road seven miles outside Hillsborough. During the American Civil War, they lost their sons to military service, all dying in Confederate army hospitals. On April 17, 1865, General Joseph E. Johnston and General William T. Sherman stopped at their home unexpectedly to discuss the terms of surrender of what would become the largest surrender of the American Civil War. The two generals met at the Bennett Farm two more days (April 18 and 26) before finalizing the surrender negotiations.
