Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was a Finnish military leader and the only field marshal of independent Finland. He was born in 1867 and he died in 1951.

He first served the Russian army. His actions in the Finnish civil war of 1918, after the Russian revolution, have aroused criticism towards him. He was the head of state between 1918 and 1919. Later, he was also involved in WW II. He's a controversial figure of Finnish history, admired by some and held in contempt by others.
