Mary Amelia Ingalls was the oldest child of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, born in January of 1865. After suffering a bout of either scarlet fever or measles (even doctors weren't sure which was which at that time) she suffered a mild stroke, which caused destruction of her optic nerves. At the age of 14, she became blind. Mary was extraordinarily brave about her affliction, and with her families help, she was able to attend the seven-year course of studies at the Iowa School for the Blind, eventually graduating. Then (somewhat pathetically) she returned home and sat for forty years doing handwork tasks. She died at the age of 63 from pneumonia, a complication of the latest of several strokes she sustained in her later years.
