He went to his mammoth imperial star destroyer. Just shortly after training his secret apprentice.
Wedge Antilles (in his X-Wing fighter) and Lando Calrissian's crew (in the Millennium Falcon) shot their complement of missiles and torpedoes and blew up the Death Star's reactor core. The detonation caused a chain reaction, obliterating the battle station.

The first would have been smaller, except the second was never completed.
In theory, the death of a star would be the cause of the death of a planet, making both catastrophic events. The death of a planet can range from the destruction of the vegetation to the destruction of the planet itself. Either way, if something makes the planet uninhabitable, then it is considered dead. The death of a star is quite different. A star doesn't have an ecosystem or anything like that. However, if a star were to go super nova, it could wipe out several planets as well, thus making them into dead planets. A star could also just fizzle out, which could cause the death of planet(s) that use the star for heat, like our sun. If our sun were to go out, our planet would become dead. I hope this is what you were asking for, and sorry if it's not. My source of information is my knowledge gained from watching Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, and the Sarah Jane Adventures. :-)
Smaller, except the second Death Star was never completed.

If u mean the death star it is.............."A Death Star was a moon-sized Imperial military battlestation armed with a planet-destroying superlaser. The Death Stars were the first in a long series of superweapons developed to execute the Tarkin Doctrine, but whose concept had been explored even before the Clone Wars. The Death Star was designed to allow Emperor Palpatine to more directly control the Galactic Empire through fear. In most instances, a Death Star was to be commanded by a Moff. One Death Star was completely built by the Empire, with the second one never reaching full completion, as well as a prototype being in existence. In addition, a scaled-down version, the Tarkin, and a Hutt knockoff, the Darksaber, would be created by the Empire and Durga the Hutt, respectively. Both Death Stars were destroyed by the Rebel Alliance shortly after they became operational. The first Death Star was destroyed by Luke Skywalker, with the help of Han Solo, and the second Death Star was destroyed by Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrissian. Following their destruction, other planet-devastating superweapons followed, including the Galaxy Gun, the Sun Crusher, and the World Devastators."
