Movies evolved out of crank and motor-driven mutoscopes, early subjects capitalized on the ( quick motion) idea, such as boxing bouts and horse races- also geared for the limited time span of two minutes.- but while on it, still in the Mutoscope period- long before regular theatrical films, the Divine Sarah did play before the Mutoscopes in Paris and naturally, in historical roles. she also had an audience with Edison and this pretty well knocks out the (Edison Movie pioneer) myth as movies were not remotely discussed but the possibility of electrical theatrical lighting and strobes may have been, such as follow-spots as we now calle them Bernhardt mutoscope boxes were an arcade-like attraction of the l900 Paris Exhibition. another popular actress of the turn of the century, Lillian Russell, had a pioneer custom car ( an electric at that) in l899 but shunned movies. she was primarily a musical star- and sound films were not viable until l927 when Warner Brothers rolled them out.
