Matt Smith will be playing the New Doctor after David Tennant.
He met Russell T Davies, the writer and showrunner for Doctor Who, when he auditioned for the lead role in Casanova which Russell T Davies also wrote. RTD thought he was amazing and gave him the Casanova role, and enjoyed working with him. When Christopher Eccleston said he was going to leave RTD asked David if he wanted the role because he knew what a great actor he was. He did not have to audition for the role.
BBC confirmed Tennant as replacement in a press release on 16 April 2005, and he appeared briefly just after regeneration in the last episode of the first series (in 2005). His first proper episode was on the Children In Need special, shown on 18th November 2005.
No. The current doctor is David Tennant, to be replaced by Matt Smith in 2010.
The answer to this question will be made up of entirely opinions, so add your opinion and why:At the moment, I belive that David Tennant is better, simply because I have seen more of him than Matt Smith. It is hard to tell, because Tennant has been on for much longer and people have not seen much of Smith. From what we have seen Tennant is better but of course this is a matter of opinion. My personal opinion is that Matt Smiths doctor is potentially better than tenant, but obviously, well need to see more of him.Well, doctor who is certainly missing something now, the rubbish bit:I think tenants doctor got a little boring and somewhat dull. We were almost constantly forced by the writer to feel sorry for him, I think Russell pushed the lonely doctor theme too much. However, new doctor, new tardis and I think more importantly new writer. Stevens a great writer, a funny writer, and has I think purposely replaced the feel sorry theme for a more fun and funny theme, which works really well. Also, the new tardis is amazing, the background music is better, and Matt's a really good actor. so yeah, I think he will be at least as good, probably better than David. David Tennant stopped being the doctor new years day 2010. (I'm guessing you mean when the 10th doctor regenerated) He announced that he was leaving Doctor Who about a year before that though. I cried because I loved him as the Doctor so much! :-(
