'House of Stairs' was written by William Sleator in 1974, and although the story differs from 'Cube', the overall theme is quite similar. Both stories involve people waking up in an elaborate maze-like structure, having no knowledge of how they got there or how to get out. The details of the two stories are very different, but one message runs through both: people will often turn on one another in stressful situations, and that often makes the situation worse. 'Cube' shows a group of adults making their way through a series of identical-looking cube rooms. It is an adult film that features some pretty gruesome scenes involving death traps in some of the rooms. The trapped people seem to have some sort of purpose, but the ultimate reason for their ordeal is never explained. 'House of Stairs' is a young-adult sci-fi novel that is more PG-13. It is a story about 5 sixteen year-old orphans who wake in a strange building that only has endless flights of stairs. On one landing, however, there is a machine that distributes pellets of delicious food if the children behave in certain ways. With no perceptable way out, they are forced to figure out the machine's methodology in order to survive.
