Liberty has been depicted as a woman on the U.S. silver dollar starting in 1794 and continuing through 1935 when the last circulating silver dollar was struck. From 1936 through 1970 there were no dollar coins struck for general circulation in the United States.

Beginning in 1971 a dollar coin bearing the likeness of Dwight D. Eisenhower was struck and continued until 1978 when the series was ended. Silver specimens of this series were struck for collectors but none of the circulation coins contained silver. This series was the last large size dollar coins struck for circulation in the United States.

1979 was the first year of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. Both circulation and collector coins were struck but none contained silver. Mintage of this series was suspended after the issuance of the 1981 coins but was resumed for one year in 1999.

In 2000 the first of the manganese brass clad dollars was issued bearing the likeness of Sacajawea. In 2009 the reverse of the coin was changed and the name was changed to Native American Dollar. The obverse still bears the likeness of Sacajawea. The reverse of this will change each year until the series in ended. None of these manganese brass clad dollars contained silver.

Beginning in 2007 the Presidential Dollar series began. Each year the obverse of these coins will bear the likeness of 4 U.S. presidents, each minted for a short time. When the series ends all U.S. presidents will have been depicted on these coins. They are also manganese brass clad and contain no silver.
