François Leguat settled at the mouth of Grand Rivière in 1704 primarily for its strategic location and abundant resources. The area offered a sheltered harbor, which was essential for fishing and trade, as well as fertile land for agriculture. Leguat and his companions sought a place where they could establish a sustainable colony and escape the harsh conditions they experienced elsewhere. Additionally, the region's biodiversity intrigued Leguat, who was interested in studying the local flora and fauna.
Leguat's attempt to form a colony on the island of Rodrigues was one of many efforts by French Protestants, or Huguenots, to form safe places of refuge. They were part of a global diaspora to escape persecution and genocide in France from the mid-16th century untll the late 18th century.Am writing a book about my travels tracing many of these early "international pioneers." It's called "A Passionate Nomad: No Obstacle Travels Along the French Huguenot Diaspora."
François Leguat died in 1735.
