He first arrived in the UK to shoot Lolita. He soon discovered that he could shoot the rest of his films in studios based around London. He bought a manor in Hertfordshire as he felt no need to return to US. Also, he disliked the constraints and conformities of the Hollywood system. He lived and shot all of his films in the UK from this point until his death.

Buster Keaton did not leave the U.S. It was Charlie Chaplin who left to Switzerland when the U.S. Government thought he was a communist sympathizer and would not let him back into the U.S. while returning from vacation abroad.
