The images of the fictional character Tarzan, like all fictional characters, are a product of their age. The fashion when Tarzan comics and movies were popular was for men to be clean-shaven.
According to the Tarzan novels, he learned to shave using his father's knife he found in his parent's cabin.

Oh, dude, Tarzan is like this ripped jungle dude who swings from vines and stuff. He's got those killer abs from all that tree-climbing and vine-swinging action. So yeah, Tarzan is basically the original muscle boy of the jungle, like, no competition there.
Disney's "Tarzan and Jane" story is about Tarzan and Jane's 1st anniversary. Jane's trying to figure out what to do for their anniversary. In the end, Tarzan's got it all planned out.
