Musicians, like other artists, come across as being passionate, creative, exciting, out of the norm of mundane life. Music tends to make many people feel alive and creative themselves, so it's quite easy to project the feelings that are aroused in fans onto the individuals who created the music and wrote the lyrics. Even if they're touring in a beat up old van, musicians tend to embody a nomadic quality--they travel various places, do whatever they choose to (record label notwithstanding) and don't come across as "settled" or stuck in a rut, the way many people feel from time to time. Fans don't see these guys in their day to day life--working a ordinary job to pay bills, going grocery shoppping and dealing with regular problems. Hanging out or having sex with people in bands (and male fans aren't any different than the female ones) is a way of buying into the fantasy themselves.
