Exactly the same way you use a road-map. Find one thing on the star-chart that looks like

what you see in the sky. Then go from there, in any direction you want, and the star-chart

shows you the names and shapes of everything you see as you move around the sky.

The star-chart is a map of the stars and constellations. You set it up in the proper position

for your location, the time and date, and which direction you're facing, and the things on

the map are set up to look just as they do in the sky.
