This is because everyone loves Big Joe. They love him because he is kind and never gets angry or violent. It's also because he is special. Special in a way that, although mentally disabled, he can do things by himself.

Big Joe goes up to the church tower. He thinks it is heaven so he can be with his dog Bertha he also goes there to see father, he thought that was heaven because he asked where Bertha was now and his mother responded by saying they were up high looking down on us, obviously with Big Joe's mental issues he thought that would be the church being one of the highest building in their little town.
