Harry lived with the Dursleys because his mother and father had been killed by Voldemort, a great dark wizard. Petunia Dursley was Harry's aunt, and his closest surviving relative. He went to live with her and her family instead of a wizarding family or an orphanage so that he could be away from all the fuss over his being the only wizard ever to escape from Voldemort. Also because of the protection that Lily put on Harry by sacrificing herself required that Harry live with someone who shared the blood of Lily to protect Harry
