He didn't want to kill himself. The cursed ring was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes and one of the Deathly Hallows: The Resurrection Stone, able to recall loved ones from the dead. Dumbledore put it on to see his dead sister, Ariana. The ring was cursed and should have killed him. Snape helped slow the curse down, but could not stop it.

Answer: In his enthusiasm of using the Resurrection Stone, he briefly forgot that, being a horcrux, it was likely to be cursed.

He didn't want to, but he was already dying as he placed a ring on his finger while it was still a Horcrux which cursed his hand.
